So, you are thinking about a trip to the Caribbean islands and your not sure where to go? No problem, why not try Rio Bueno in Jamaica? Rio Bueno is a small fishing town about 32 miles along the north coast of Jamaica from Montego Bay, east as the crow flies, if you fly west the crow will end up in Mexico. Rio Bueno has a claim to fame, it is believed this was the first place Christopher Columbus first set foot in Jamaica, some say Discovery Bay (thus the name) but unless you asked the bloke himself, the argument will continue. The Name Rio Bueno may have come about because of the depth of the harbour, the deepest in Jamaica, and a great attraction from tourist by land and sea.

Rio Bueno is a small fishing community but there are some delights to enchant the eye, the scenery up and down the river has been used in major Hollywood movies and thousands of home movies, it is a truly beautiful experience to wobble and bobble down the river on what is in essence a large inner tube coloured Orange with a couple of handles to stop you falling off, there really are arranged tours from several points up and down Rio Bueno, you can bounce the rapids on these Tubes, really (If you are mad enough!).

There are more waterborne activities that will take you to and from Rio Bueno, such as Kayaking, Rafting and Water boarding or River Boarding but it all amounts to the same thing, a fantastic, exhilarating day out in one of Jamaica’s beautiful settings.

Rio Bueno is not totally bereft of cultural sites to visit, for example; there is the ruins of an 18 century colonial fort you can wander around, great for the photographers, there are also some excellent historic buildings of a bygone era and delightful churches that offer views across the Caribbean Sea.

Getting to Rio Bueno is not at all difficult, you can get there from Montego Bay, Falmouth and Ocho Rios, taxis are plentiful and there is the option of shore excisions for the Pirates amongst you. All in all a truly pleasant and authentic Jamaica location.
